Giannella's Delicatessen and Bakery has been a cornerstone of Glen Rock's downtown since it has opened in 1990. A quarter century of serving Glen Rock residents is considered a young history for this family business as the business itself dates back nearly a century ago.
Raffaelle, great-grandfather of current owner Michael, founded Giannella's in Paterson, NJ in the year 1927, just a few years after he immigrated to the United States from Italy. After returning from WW2, Raffaelle's son Silvio along with his brother Mario, helped Raffaelle build his small bakery into a large wholesale operation and opened their first retail location in Paterson. Silvio and Mario took over the business in the late 1940's. They expanded their wholesale business as well as opening their famous "Giannella's Bakery & Delicatessen" retail location on 21st Avenue, Paterson, NJ in the year 1959.
Silvio, with the help of his wife Sylvia and their six children (Dianna, Fiore, Robert, Richard, Ralph and Thomas) continued to grow their family business. They opened a second location in 1976 on Route 23 in Wayne, NJ, followed by their only remaining location in Glen Rock, NJ in the year 1990. Over the span of 90 years and counting the Giannella Family has employed thousands of people.
In 1998 Silvio began to downsize the business, selling the wholesale bakery in Paterson and two of the retail locations in Paterson and Wayne. However, Giannella's Deli of Glen Rock is better than ever! With an updated store and menu, the magic that had made Giannella's so special in the past has been recaptured.
Giannella's offers a wide variety of food, delicious treats and services, including CATERING! Their sandwiches are legendary, just ask any Glen Rock resident about their "Johnny Depp" or "Glen Rock Italian Combo". A large amount of the food served is homemade. If it isn't homemade, Giannella's strives to carry the very best! Including... Gifford's award winning ice cream; Kobrick's gourmet coffee & cold brew; and deli meats including Di Lusso, Boar's Head, Citterio, and turkeys from the family run, century old, Michigan Turkey Producers.
When Raffaelle Giannella started his bakery years ago he focused on supreme quality and exemplary service. Four generations later his principles are still paramount, with one new addition, tradition.
